Data Center Infrastructure: What Businesses Get Wrong When Planning a New Facility

A data center project that starts without proper planning almost always runs over budget, over timeline, or both — and still doesn't deliver the performance it was supposed to. The mistakes are predictable. Most of them happen before a single rack is installed.

Building or upgrading a data center is one of the most significant technology investments a business will make. The hardware is expensive. The downtime during implementation is costly. And the consequences of getting it wrong whether that's underspecifying capacity, choosing the wrong cooling solution, or skipping redundancy can affect operations for years.

Here are the most common mistakes businesses make when planning data center infrastructure, and how to avoid them.

Underestimating future capacity. The number one mistake. Businesses plan for today's requirements and forget to account for growth. A data center that's at 80% capacity within two years of opening is already a problem the cost of expansion, including downtime, hardware, and reconfiguration, is significant. Plan for three to five years of projected growth, not current load.

Ignoring cooling from the start. Cooling is not an afterthought. Heat is the primary cause of hardware failure and data centers generate significant heat at scale. Hot aisle/cold aisle containment, precision air conditioning, and monitoring solutions need to be specified alongside the server and storage hardware not retrofitted after the facility is running.

Choosing hardware without considering the full ecosystem. A server from one vendor, storage from another, and networking from a third can work but only if someone has verified compatibility and planned the integration properly. Fragmented procurement from multiple vendors without a systems integration perspective leads to configuration issues, gaps in support coverage, and longer deployment timelines.

Skipping redundancy on critical systems. Power and cooling redundancy exist for one reason: to ensure that when something fails, operations continue. Redundancy is expensive upfront. Downtime is more expensive. For any business where continuous operations are critical, N+1 redundancy at minimum should be standard.

Not involving the distributor early enough. A good IT distributor with data center expertise can advise on design, suggest the right hardware configurations for the specific environment, and coordinate multi-vendor deployments. Bringing them in after procurement decisions are already made loses most of that value.

Data center projects succeed when they're treated as infrastructure projects not just IT purchases. Planning, specification, and partner selection matter as much as the hardware itself.
